I noticed, I think on Mastermind, that one of the contestants introduced himself as 'Retired' when asked his name and occupation. I liked this. Why we feel the need to use Retired Engineer/Engine Driver/Teacher/Sagger Makers Bottom Knocker etc., I don't know. Why the need?.
What do others think?

I suppose that people feel that being a Retired Lawyer is more prestigious than being a Retired Dustbinman, and they want people to be aware of their former status.

The fact that they now have exactly the same status being simply retired  seems to escape them.

I of course am not retired, but if I were to be I would most likely say I was a retired rocket scientist

Well I am a retired STATIGENT, as my stepdaughter Gemma used to call me when she was very  young. Work that out!!!!
